Eliminate Citizens United
Since the 2010 Citizens United ruling 24 states have passed resolutions in favor of a constitutional amendment to restore our power to control campaign spending.
For Our Freedom constitutional amendment
Make Our Elections Fair
We can eliminate the Buckley vs Valeo (1976) and Citizens United vs FEC (2010) Supreme Court decisions with the For Our Freedom constitutional amendment. If ratified, it will free Congress and state legislatures to enact effective campaign finance reform. We will then be able to level the political playing field.
Text of the For Our Freedom amendment
Section 1. We the People have compelling sovereign interests in the freedom of speech, representative self-government, federalism, the integrity of the electoral process, and the political equality of natural persons.
Section 2. Nothing in this Constitution shall be construed to forbid Congress or the States, within their respective jurisdictions, from reasonably regulating and limiting contributions and spending in campaigns, elections, or ballot measures.
Section 3. Congress and the States shall have the power to implement and enforce this article by appropriate legislation and may distinguish between natural persons and artificial entities, including by prohibiting artificial entities from raising and spending money in campaigns, elections, or ballot measures.
“For Our Freedom,” was drafted by American Promise. Their goal: “Passage of the For Our Freedom constitutional amendment to restore reasonable limits on money in our campaigns and elections.”
This is Doable!
The constitution has been amended 27 times. Amendment 28 can be ratified because campaign finance reform has support from all corners of the political spectrum.
The system is broken and everyone knows it, including our elected officeholders. Your representatives did not enter politics so they could spend most of their time asking powerbrokers for campaign contributions. They prefer to work for us, not the donor class. We need to make that possible. The “For Our Freedom” amendment could be called the “Free the Politicians” amendment.
Since the 2010 Citizens United ruling 24 states have passed resolutions in favor of a constitutional amendment to restore our power to control campaign spending.[1] American Promise considers the states to be “Ready to Ratify” the amendment. The resolutions are not specific to the “For Our Freedom” amendment; however they have the same goal.
Colorado passed Amendment 65 in 2012, with 74% in favor and 26% opposed.[2] It instructed “Colorado's congressional delegation to propose and support, and the members of Colorado's state legislature to ratify, an amendment to the United States constitution that allows congress and the states to limit campaign contributions and spending.”
A 2025 national poll showed 71% of Americans in favor and only 8% opposed to the amendment. 22% were undecided.[3] The poll showed strong support amoung Democrats, Republicans, independent and third party voters. Why? Because most voters are tired of getting ripped off.
The Supreme court gave too much power to large corporations and the rich. We now have an opportunity to take back our democracy.
